Transit ribbon cutting 

A ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Ray Street Building for Martin County Transit was held on July 24, 2019. 



Martin County Transit (MCT) is a public transportation system that operates as a branch of the Martin County government, with funding assistance from the state and federal government. The system operates a fleet of vehicles, including specially modified vans and LTV vehicles to accommodate the elderly, and/or physically challenged.

  • Anyone in Martin County can ride to anywhere in North Carolina where MCT routes are established.   
  • Martin County Transit is a demand response public transportation provider that provides a “curb to curb” service.
  • The curb to curb transportation service starts at and finishes with the curb where the rider is picked up from or discharged to.
  • Transportation services are provided for persons who have physical or mental challenges.
  • Martin County Transit has 13 vehicles in its fleet. The system has four 25 foot light-transit vehicles (All are lift-equipped), Two 20 foot light-transit vehicles (both are lift-equipped), two twelve-passenger standard vehicles (neither have lifts), two mini-vans (each have ADA ramps), and three conversion vehicles (Two are lift-equipped).
  • Martin County Transit operates 8 vehicles, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 4:00 AM and 5:00 PM. The system provides employment, medical, nutrition, recreation, shopping, educational, human service, and general public transportation services.
  • MCT provides General Public Transportation to all citizens of Martin County. This is a state supported program where anyone who is a resident of Martin County can themselves purchase transportation services.
  • Citizens can ask about agencies in the community that pay for transportation. (A list of agencies is below.) 
  • MCT also provides Medicaid Transportation which is at no cost to a person who has full Medicaid coverage and is preapproved by the Martin County DSS for this service/trip. Medicaid Transportation pays only for the trips to Medicaid covered treatment or services. Call the Martin County Department of Social Services at 1-252-789-4460 about Medicaid Transportation eligibility.
  • For efficiency purposes, multiple clients from the general public are generally picked-up on the same trip / route.

  • Martin County Aging and Adult Services Department
  • Martin-Tyrrell-Washington Regional Health Department
  • SSI (Supplemental Security Income)
  • Physicians East – Center for Infectious Disease
  • Marion Shepherd Cancer Center
  • Leo Jenkins Cancer Center
  • General public

Transit services are provided Monday – Friday 4:00 am to 5:00 pm (Saturday service is provided for dialysis patients)

  • Call in at least 3 days in advance for out of county transportation trips. Seating is arranged on a first come first served seat availability basis. A 3 day notice is required also for Medicaid Transportation funded trips.
  • To cancel transportation call Martin County Transit at 252-789-4390. Speak to the office staff or leave the message on the machine. (Please do not text.) You must notify Martin County Transit 24 hours before your scheduled pick up time to avoid being billed as a “no show”. Please keep in mind that repeat cancellations made at your pick up point are considered “no shows” and they will result in future services being denied.  You will be billed for all “no show” events.  The “no show” bill(s) must be paid in full in order for you to ride MCT again.

  • Within Williamston City Limits > $2.00 per stop
  • Trips into Williamston from 2 miles outside Williamston City Limits > $3.00 one stop only
  • BEST BARGAIN …………. Ride to anywhere in Martin County for just $5.00 (one way/one stop trip)
  • Round Trips (taking you back home) within Martin County to anywhere in Martin County $10.00

Inclement Weather

Martin County Transit will use good judgment to limit or cancel scheduled trips when hazardous conditions or severe weather is occurring. MCT observes the local school board policy for closing due to weather conditions.

TAB meetings:

The Martin County Transportation Advisory Board meets quarterly at the MCT building located at 205 East Main Street Williamston, N.C.  These meetings are on the fourth Wednesday of February, May, August, and also the second Wednesday in November (due to Holiday). The meetings are at 12 noon and last about an hour. Martin County Transit welcomes feedback. Department of Transportation is developing the Public Transportation Statewide Strategic Plan to improve bus, rail, and paratransit services across the state by better matching transit services to the needs of North Carolinians.
