Martin County office of the tax assessor is responsible for the listing, appraising and assessing real and personal property. The department processes applications for tax relief and tax that may be granted under the state laws.

The department functions are conducted in the Martin County courthouse located at 305 East Main St. Williamston, NC 27892

Each January the tax department mails abstracts to all owners of real property and/or personal property for the purpose of listing property for taxation. These forms must be completed and returned to the tax department no later january 31.

In the spring, after the board of county commissioners establishes the tax rate for the coming year, taxes due are computed on the basis of real and personal property owned. The bills are printed and mailed the first week of August. There is a 2% discount given if the bill is paid in the month of August only, from September 1st. Through January 5th the bill is due in full after January 5th (of the following calendar year) interest is assessed on the basis of delinquency.

State law provides for a reduction of property taxes for certain qualified taxpayers 65 years of age or older, and for citizens who are totally and permanently disabled. Further information about this feature of the law may be obtained from the tax office. Phone 252-789-4350. Mon. - Fri. between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The county tax rate is .785 per 100, for year 2007. Our last revaluation was effective January 1st 2001, at 100% of market value. State law requires that a revaluation must be done no less than every eight years. We anticipate our next revaluation to be effective January 1st 2009.

Currently our property tax cards and tax maps are not on line.
